What is SEO as Product?
SEO as Product is a new way of understanding search engine optimisation: it turns a position on Google into a product. What is sold is not the work of trying to reach the top; it is the result, already achieved.
In traditional SEO, the business buys hours, waits months and carries the risk that the result never arrives. In SEO as Product, whoever builds the position carries that risk up front: they build the website, take it to the top for a specific trade and area, and then offer it to a real business, which occupies it the way it would lease a shop on the best street.
The result is a product you can see before you buy, with a fixed, understandable price, that brings calls and customers from day one. For the business, ranking stops being a gamble and becomes a decision as simple as renting a shop window.
How it works
SEO as Product versus SEO as a service
Traditional SEO is a service: someone works on your website for months and promises results. SEO as Product turns that around. The position is already built before you arrive, you can see it in the search engine before you pay, and you occupy it the way you would lease a shop.
| SEO as a service | SEO as Product | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Hours of work and a promise | A position that is already built |
| When you see results | Months later, if ever | Before you pay |
| Price | Variable, per project | Fixed fee, like rent |
| Risk | Carried by the client | Carried by whoever builds the position |
| Exclusivity | Your agency also works for your competitors | One position, one business per trade and area |
The Search Plot: the unit of the product
A Search Plot is the combination of a trade, an area and a city: “locksmith, La Sagrera, Barcelona”. It is the smallest parcel of Digital Real Estate.
It is valuable for three reasons. Scarcity, because only a few spots in each area are really seen. Proximity, because it answers people searching a few streets away. And rent, because it generates calls and customers every month. With a history of visibility and leads, a Search Plot can be valued like any property: what it generates against what it costs to maintain.
Why it is worth more than ever
Search engines know where a searcher is to within metres and increasingly recommend by proximity. And search is becoming conversation: people ask an assistant, and the assistant answers with a few options taken from the top results in each area.
Ten links become one answer. The position on top today is the one that decides what the AI says about that neighbourhood. The land has not become cheaper: it has become concentrated.

An avenue for everyone
The mission of SEO as Product is to democratise the best corner of every city. Today it is won by those who can pay agencies or ads every month, and by platforms that charge for every customer. This model puts it within reach of any business: the emergency locksmith, electrician or plumber, the restaurant, the corner shop, the clinic, the office or the academy. In any city in the world, because every city has neighbourhoods and every neighbourhood has an avenue.
The local business
Takes the best position in its neighbourhood without knowing SEO, for a fixed, understandable fee, and without middlemen taking a cut of every customer.
The entrepreneur
Tests an idea with real customers before investing in a physical shop. Testing on a digital avenue costs far less than signing a lease.
The brand
Needs presence in many neighbourhoods at once. An inventory of Search Plots works as a portfolio of locations.
Trust code
If an assistant repeats what a position says as fact, every detail is a public promise. Anyone building Digital Real Estate should keep these principles:
- Every position is held by a real, verified business.
- The details (hours, area, prices, phone) are true and kept up to date.
- Every site says who is behind it: the company that builds it and the business that occupies it.
- One position, one business per trade and area: never working for a direct competitor.
- Reviews are real. They are never invented.
Three concepts that add up
Digital Real Estate, redefined
“Digital real estate” has described what is valuable online for decades. But each era used it for a different asset, and the first three looked at the same thing: where your address sits on the web.
The fourth looks at something else: where you are when someone searches for you. That is the busy avenue. Not the domain, not the website, but page one for “locksmith near me”.
- 1990s and 2000sThe domain
A good .com name was land on the internet. It was bought and resold.
- 2010sThe website with traffic
Sites with visitors were bought and sold like income-producing property.
- 2021The virtual plot
The metaverse sold land that only existed inside a platform.
- NowThe position
Being on top when people search in your city. It is what people see and what AI assistants read.
- Digital Real Estate
- The top positions in search engines and AI assistant answers, by trade and area, equivalent to a shop on your city’s busiest avenue: a scarce asset with an address, built, leased, and generating customers.Definition by Ángel Ibáñez Pérez, author of the SEO as Product concept. Frequently asked questions
What is SEO as Product?
It is the model in which a search position is offered already built, visible before payment and at a fixed price, rather than as a service with uncertain results. Instead of selling hours of SEO and waiting for results, the position is delivered already won.
How is this different from “digital real estate” as domains or the metaverse?
Those uses valued an address, or a plot inside a platform. This definition values the position at the moment of search: where you appear when someone in your city needs you.
How is the position kept at the top?
With the SEO Ultra Local™ System: every Search Plot is built and looked after month by month so it stays on top. That is why it is a product: whoever occupies it gets the position and its upkeep, with nothing else to worry about.
